Frequently Asked Questions
We will ask you about your age, whether you are able to read and communicate in English, your pregnancy status, and your current symptoms of depression. You will be asked about whether you are currently receiving treatment for mental health, and if you own your own iPhone. Answers to these questions will help us determine if you are eligible to participate in this study at this time. If you are not eligible at this time, you will be asked if you are interested in being contacted about future research opportunities.
The study is currently only available in English.
We are unable to share your individual results from the study with you or your health care provider. This includes, but is not limited to, digital health and sensing data obtained from your phone sensors.
No, you are not eligible for this study if you are currently receiving treatment for mental health care.
Participants who are affiliated with a UCLA Health System clinic are eligible to participate in the study. Research assessment visits will be conducted remotely, and we will mail study supplies to your mailing address. You do need to reside in the US for the duration of the study (i.e., three months).
You can travel while enrolled in the study, but you are still required to use the devices daily and complete the weekly assessments in order to receive compensation, which includes having access to Wi-Fi and being able to meet the charging requirements.
If you are traveling in a location that does not have Wi-Fi or enable you to meet daily charging requirements, missing study data due to this may affect compensation earned and your ability to keep the Apple Watch at the end of the study.
Participants must own a functioning iPhone 11 or later with iOS 18 or later to use for the duration of the study. You must be the sole user of this iPhone- having a shared iPhone with others is not permitted for this study.
No, you can only use your own iPhone with your own iCloud account. This is to ensure data integrity and confidentiality.
If you share an iCloud account with others, you should sign out of the iCloud account on devices that are not used exclusively by you. Alternatively, you can create your own iCloud account to use on the devices that are used exclusively by you.
Yes, if you have family sharing setup for your iCloud account, you can still participate in the study.
Yes. If you change your iPhone during the study, we ask that you perform an iCloud back-up before switching and restore from the iCloud back-up on the new phone in order to maintain enrollment in the study. Please note that your new iPhone will still need to be a model 11 or newer.
No, owning your own Apple Watch is not required to participate in this study. An Apple Watch will be provided to you for use in the study; if you provide the required amount of data, you will be eligible to keep the watch at the end of the study.
If you own your own Apple Watch S8 or later, with watchOS 11 or later, you can use your own Apple Watch for the duration of the study.
You can choose which wrist to wear the device on, but it is important to wear the Apple Watch on the wrist chosen during set-up. If you change wrist positioning after set-up, please update this in the Watch app.
Yes, you can use a different band so long as it continues to be worn snug on your wrist. If you find that sleeping with the provided Apple Watch band is uncomfortable while sleeping, we encourage you to purchase an alternative watch band.
If the study-provided Apple Watch is cracked or damaged during the course of the study, you will be instructed to contact Apple Care. You may be required to pay a fee to replace the damaged device.
You will be asked to wear your Apple Watch for at least 20 hours each day, which includes during the day and while sleeping, for the first four weeks of the study. You will also be asked to charge your Apple Watch for at least 2 hours each day as part of the daily charging requirements.
In order to support data collection, you will be asked to meet daily charging requirements, which includes charging your Apple Watch and iPhone together for at least two hours each day, while the devices are connected via Bluetooth and are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. You do not have to charge during the same two hours each day, and you can break this up into smaller chunks of time during the day if you prefer.
All participants will receive an unregistered US Bank Focus Blue Program Visa card at the start of the study. This card will be registered to them after their Baseline visit is completed. Initial compensation will be loaded onto the card after the Baseline visit is completed, and then in four-week increments (Weeks 4, 8, and 12). If study participation is ended prematurely before a four-week interval has ended, no compensation will be issued for any data received in that four-week interval.
